FOUR SCHOLARSHIPS ARE AVAILABLE



Robert C. Miller Memorial Scholarship — $1,500
Robert C. Miller (1915-2004) was a United Press International correspondent and longtime BIPC supporter. He covered wars and other stories since WWII and also was a bureau chief for UPI in Honolulu. BIPC’s scholarship program started when former Hawaii Legislator Doc Hill spontaneously donated money in 1968 after hearing an inspiring speech by Miller at a Press Club function.

Jack Markey Memorial Scholarship — $500

The late Jack Markey was a radio man and charter member of the Big Island Press Club. He served with passion on the BIPC scholarship committee.

Yukino-new.jpg Yukino Fukabori Memorial Scholarship — $500

Yukino Fukabori (1910-1995) was a reporter for the Hawaii Tribune-Herald and a teacher at Hilo High School. Her scholarship is funded by her family, the Okamuras, and administered by BIPC.

Steven Christensen Scholarship — $500

Steven Christensen is a retired attorney who donated legal work to the Press Club for years. The scholarship in his name is funded by his wife. Edna, and administered by BIPC.

ELIGIBILITY



Applicants must:

  • Have residential ties to the Big Island;
  • Have clear interest in and aptitude for a career in journalism or related field;
  • Be pursuing a degree in journalism or related field at an accredited institution of higher learning;
  • Maintain a strong record of academic achievement.
  • Have lived on the Big Island for at least a year immediately prior to the application date; they also qualify if their parents or guardians live on the Big Island and the applicant is a dependent, or if they are attending college on the Big Island.  (High school graduates from other islands who have been accepted for admission to a Big Island college are not qualified until after they have completed at least one year of study there.)

Applicants must submit:

  • A completed scholarship application form;
  • A personal typewritten letter in which you express career goals, extracurricular activities, and any other information that may be pertinent;
  • Official high school transcript, including SAT/ACT scores (recent high schoool grads only);
  • A full transcript of college grades if now enrolled in college;
  • Work samples, if available. These may include published articles, photographs, audio and/or videotapes, or other relevant materials.  Please do not send term papers or other unpublished work submitted to fulfill course requirements;

Applications must be postmarked by June 11, 2008.

The Scholarship Committee will review applications and interview finalists in late June. The award of all scholarships is made subject to proof of registration in an accredited college or university for the school year for which the award is made. Winners must be full-time students for the academic year to receive the full scholarship amount.
