February 2022 Gleanings

Note from the Editor

We’re taking a look back in this issue, courtesy of BIPC member Rod Thompson and his collection of programs from the vaunted BIPC Imu roasts. Have something for Gleanings? Email me: nclauer@gmail.com.

BIPC ‘Imu’ programs headed to Lyman Museum

Booklets from 1968 to 1980 highlight the Big Island’s political and journalistic history

The covers of the first BIPC Imu booklet in 1968, drawn by Honolulu Advertiser cartoonist Harry Lyons, with Honolulu mayor Frank Fasi in the center. A careful reading of the covers show the program was "presented" by BIPC, but performed by members of the visiting Honolulu Press Club. Later shows were written and performed by BIPC members.

Program booklets from 50 years ago for BIPC's "Imu" shows roasting public figures are being donated to Hilo's Lyman Museum by BIPC member Rod Thompson. The booklets, with colorful glossy covers and many inside photos of prominent Big Island citizens, cover most of the years from 1968 to 1980. Credit also goes to BIPC member Hal Glatzer who donated four of the eight booklets to the club a few years ago with the booklets finally being placed in Rod's care. BIPC scanned portions of the material for its archives, said BIPC Past President Nancy Cook Lauer. "When I spoke to Lyman collections manager Lynn Elia in December, she questioned me very closely and noncommittally," Rod said. "She told me the Lyman trustees would have to vote on accepting the booklets. I was supposed to bring them to the museum for a review but never got around to doing so." A few days ago I got a call from Lynn saying the trustees had voted to accept the donations sight unseen. When I checked a list of the trustees, I discovered that some of them had probably been among the roastees over the years, and one of the trustees is Hilo businessman Richard Henderson, a former member of BIPC."

Blast from the past!
Know any of these people? Have fond – or not so fond -- remembrances? We’d love to hear about them. Just drop a note, and we’ll be glad to share them in future Gleanings.

A special mahalo to Rod Thompson for seeing these gems find a safe place for future generations of journalists.

They’re baaaaccccccccckkkkkkkkkk

Tiffany Edwards Hunt and Karin Stanton have been BIPC backbones for as long as we can remember. We’re so grateful they’ve agreed to be on the board this year. These two really don’t need an introduction, but here goes:

Tiffany Edwards Hunt is a middle school social studies teacher and a "Greenwaves Gazette" adviser at Kea'au Middle School. She is also the Ke Kalahea student newspaper adviser at UH Hilo. Prior to teaching and advising full-time, Hunt worked as an investigative reporter, freelance writer, and publisher of Big Island Chronicle. She has been a member of BIPC since 2001.

A native of England, Karin Stanton followed the Union Jack to Hawaii in 1992. She earned a bachelors degree in journalism / political science from Western Washington University in Bellingham, Wash., and has more than three decades experience reporting on and about the Big Island. In addition to co-founding the award-winning website Hawaii247.com, Karin has worked for West Hawaii Today, The Associated Press, Thomson Reuters and continues to freelance for anyone who will actually pay for writing. Currently, Karin picks up a regular paycheck, health insurance benefits and a bit of ringworm at Kona Petco, where she spends an inordinate amount of time talking about cat litter and dog poop. Otherwise, she is hanging out with her cats, friends and family, watching English Premiership football, and shouting derogatory comments at people on Fox News.
